Even though the extra letters make it take longer to type in Latin 
letters, I agree.
Especially if you ever want to study Japanese - speaking, reading or writing.
As for pronounciation by Japanese, I understand that there are some 
regional differences/dialects. An American friend that I worked with 
in Hokkaido took his family to visit a Japanese friend around Kyoto. 
The Japanese friend noted that the kids spoke Japanese with a 
"Hokkaido accent" :-)
