	Not so far as I can see.  One of the things I find difficult with
Japanese (and Thai and probably many others including English) is
putting in letters where no sound is made.  It's been only since this
Basho that I found out that Mikey's name is pronounced Kotomitski.  And
there's that whole "shi" thing.  Makushta, Konishki, etc.  Spelling it
like it sounds would be a great help for me.  Now that I have (really
crappy) speakers for this computer I can go to Moti's Audio Banzuke and
hear him properly pronounce the names.  But for reading it would be
better, I think, if words were written as they sound.

P.S. About 5 or 6 years ago I came THIS close to marrying a Thai girl.
Her name spelled in English was "Boonsri" but it was pronounced
"Boonsi".  It's to bad her father forbade her from marrying a non-Thai.
