To me, although no one asked for my opinion, moderation = censorship. The
other poster who questioned the determination of post acceptability by one
person is absolutely correct. We have gone along for a number of years
without this procedure. At one point, Joe K-jo did step in (I was even
peripherally involved in that incident), but the fact is that the
complainers are very few compared to the population of the list. Just tally
up the ayes and nays - or better yet, the non-respondents.

I hate football, hockey and most other sports, but I would never castigate
those posters for going on about that. I just hit "delete". I may not agree
with the perceived politics in the link from Emmett's post, so I just
stopped reading. But that does not change my very high regard for Emmett nor
my awareness that he is in harm's way through no fault of his own. Again, to
know that someone has a boy in Iraq, or that there is a nurse on our list
that was in the center of the medical volunteer corps on September 11 - that
makes the list a list with camaraderie that you may not find in other lists.
No need for a separate "sumo - off-topic" list. How would we know these
things about our fellow ML-ers, or if and when they may need some kind
words?

We have never been quite anonymous to one another, anyway. A few have
written of their travails on this list, with nothing less than encouraging
comments from the rest of us. Others have likely received some form of hate
mail personally. Some of us are neurotic, other confident, others arrogant,
and others just self-promoting. We have had our share of flame wars. But the
complaints are so few and far between, and Joe is doing such a wonderful
job, let's just let it be.

Now, I need to get back to my blog on yesterday's soken:-)
