If I can relate my own personal experience here...

>From my dinner with Barbara and Asashoryu, which is mentioned on
Barbara's new blog (an excellent read, by the way, and may I add
that I was "dragged" much like a child would have to be dragged to
Willy Wonka's chocolate factory for a birthday party), Asashoryu
did not seem impressed by Hakuho's move against him in the yusho
playoff (Asashoryu's bout against Chiyotaikai acknowledged). The
impression that I have is that Asashoryu will be at his best this
tournament, and Hakuho will have to step up against Asashoryu to
earn the title outright or in a playoff and to earn the title of
Yokozuna in a Yokozuna-like performance. Should Hakuho get runner
up at 14-1, 13-2, or 12-3 is out of Asashoryu's direct hands
whether the YDC would promote Hakuho. Again, this is my impression
from Asashoryu, that he wants to see Hakuho worthy of the honor of
Yokozuna, and a henka won't earn that respect. As I mentioned in
my original post on the topic, I was in listening mode that
evening, honored to be included as an invitee to Barbara's dinner
with Asashoryu, and I didn't ask such questions.

I think 40% is a pretty good guestimate. Any losses in the first 10
days will be devistating to his chances.
