Matsutani belongs to Matsugane beya. 23 years old. Joined in March 2006. 
1.77/123 kilos. Jonidan yusho. Techniques- tsuki/oshi, but dabbles in 
the occasional nage and uchimuso. He has darkish skin like his shisho. 
Kyushu shusshin. His physique differs from his shisho-he is muscular, 
but has the same weight problems like his shisho-can't seem to add 
weight. "I want to weigh 140 kilos", he says, eating many bowls of rice. 
At elementary school in Fukuoka, he did sumo, baseball and Judo, but 
"there is no tie in Sumo, and it suits me well.." so he decided to opt 
for sumo in high school. He got a yusho at the national student open 
class championships and a jun-yusho in the national adult A group 
tournament. "When I graduated and was thinking of my future, I decided 
to go with Sumo", he explained. He was wooed by many heyas but decided 
to go with Matsugane because he approached first. No MK yet for him. in 
Hatsu, he gt a KK from his highest ever rank of Sandanme 2, and will be 
in Makushita this basho. "I have arrived to a place where I can be 
recognized as a pro..", he said. Matsugane beya has undergone some major 
changes lately, with their two top rikishi Wakatsutomu and Harunoyama's 
retirements. "I'd like Matsutani to 'pull' the heya", said the Oyakata.
