Hi Scott,
Points well taken. I don't have many of the sources for information that you do.
I based my post from the information offered on the list. I really do like Asa and my faith in him as a person has returned due to your information.
Thank you
philafuji

I have to disagree with you, Phil.

Asashoryu has the highest respect for sumo and for his position, coming
directly from the sumotori's mouth, so to speak. And it is because of
that, I have to defend him. From our brief interaction, he appears to
understand very well that the position of Yokozuna is an honor. I would
suggest that the anecdotes presented here by mailing list members
supercedes the sensationalism of newspaper reports.

Being Mongolian, Asashoryu is in a unique position as an international
ambassador, and it is my opinion that the Kyokai has to adapt to the
demands placed on Asashoryu. Otherwise, as someone said before,
accusations of xenophobia will resonate more loudly. He was
participating in an international goodwill event for kids, not an
autograph signing exhibition for cash or a rap recording session. Having
read from trusted sources about his current injury situation, which
makes his 14 bout winning streak and yusho that much more impressive, I
would rather see him sit out the Jungyu and recover to the point where
he is his usual dominant self. I view this much the opposite way, that
the Kyokai holds Asashoryu's responsibilities as Yokozuna paramount over
his wider role as ambassador, not as Asashoryu acting in a Wajima-like
manner.

I think this is an important issue for the Kyokai to address, do they
wish allow change to accomodate the demands placed on Asashoryu, or do
they remain rigid and are all yokozuna created equal, regardless of
their being Japanese or foreign.

Respectfully,
Sukubidubidu
