I'm glad you posted this Doreen because it allows me to ask a question :-)
I'm going to try to go to the next basho on the mid Saturday and Sunday
(it's in Tokyo, right?).  I've never been before and I have absolutely no
idea how to buy tickets (heh heh... clueless newbie!)

Is it reasonable to do as you mentioned and show up early in the morning?
Do I have a good chance of getting tickets?  I'm actually just coming
from Sagara (an hour bus ride from Shizuoka-shi), so it's not a huge
expense for me (as opposed to coming from outside Japan).  But all the
same I'd like to have a good chance to get tickets if I'm going to go into
Tokyo.

Also, someone mentioned an inexpensive hotel in Tokyo previously, but
I've lost the post.  If it's not too much trouble can I ask someone to
give me a pointer?

I'm actually moving to Japan next Sunday, so I'm super excited about
getting the opportunity to watch lots of sumo!
