Ichihara, Makushita West 1, (4-3) over Ryuho by
utchari
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Former College and Amateur yokozuna debuting in this
Hatsu basho as Makushita Tsukedashi 10 beating Ryuho
and heading to Juryo next basho)
"I couldn't stay calm at all. I had people I know
coming over to show me their support here so it
wouldn't really cool losing in front of them. I feel
so happy getting Kachikoshi."
"I always felt I needed to go out and seize it myself.
What's ahead from now on will become more crucial."
Kyokutenho (11-1) over Hochiyama by yorikiri, 4.4
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting a strong foothold on Makuuchi by winning a
Makuuchi bout)
"It gives you a thrill winning in Makuuchi. I try to
win as many as possible now so I can go up higher on
the banzuke."
Kaiho (9-3) over Tokitsuumi by sukuinage, 5.8 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
"I want to win one more. Yesterday I won a clock
playing Bingo. I feel I've been too lucky."
Hokutoriki (9-3) over Toyohibiki by hatakikomi, 3.2
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(So close, they needed a mono-ii to determine if his
heel over the ring did not touch outside before his
oppoent's hand)
"So my heel was still in. But actually if you go down
with your whole body, you can stay in longer. I am so
glad that I made sure to shave the skin off from the
back of my feet the other day..."
Tochinonada (9-3) over Homasho by yorikiri, 3.3
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Stopping energetic Homasho with one powerful push
while his beard is getting thicker)
"Superstitious? Yeah that's true. But also I was
finding it was getting to be too much of bother to
shave every day."
"It's been a while I had a bout that went exactly the
way I imagined it. This was my best sumo this basho.
Against an opponent like him, you cannot win unless
you keep moving forward. You may not be aware but I
still consider myself to be one of the youngsters here
too."
Homasho (9-3) losing to Tochinonada
------------------------------------------
(Down and out after suffering his third loss. Nothing
to say for today's bout but will be facing Kotomitsuki
tomorrow)
"....I will have to go with everthing I have...."
Kisenosato (8-4) over Kitazakura by tsukiotoshi, 7.3
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Late coming out of tachiai but ended up winning
despite enduring one sided offensive efforts from
Kotozakura)
"Darn it, I know. I looked totally uncoordinated out
there."
"It was just awful. If I come up a sumo like today's,
I'd be no match against top ranked rikishi. I also
have to study much more about tachiai."
(On a possibility of facing Kotomitsuki)
"If that's going to happen, I want to fix what's not
working before then."
"I know I should't be just satisfied with Kachikoshi."
Tokitenku (4-8) losing to Asasekiryu by oshidashi, 4.9
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Second time around in Sanyaku but losing and getting
Makekoshi)
"Well I suppose now there is always the next basho."
(On hearing it's possible that he could keep a Sanyaku
ranking with 7 wins by being placed on the West side
next basho)
"In that case I will have to do all my best."
Chiyotaikai (7-5) losing to Kotomitsuki by
uwate-dashinage, 4.9 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I lost my balance when I got pushed up. I got hit
below my chin. That almost got me bowled over."
Kotomitsuki (11-2) over Chiyotaikai
-----------------------------------------
(Showing no wavering despite losing yesterday. Not
letting Chiyotaikai do anything with his fierce
Tsuppari)
"I showed my best sumo today. I decided I wouldn't
worry about losing consecutively and tried to go with
a good sumo."
(The loss caused so much grief that he admits he
couldn't sleep well last night)
"I let it drag me down all night. I got so upset with
myself, I screamed out lout in the middle of night."
(Saying he felt better after a morning training
session today)
"I just decided to simply forget about it."
(On the yusho race)
"I hope to stay with the leaders."
"If I start thinking about a lot of things, I won't be
able to move well. I will be focusing solely on the
day's opponent."
Former Sadogatake oyakata (former yokozuna Kotozakura)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(On Kotomitsuki this basho)
"I sense a new attituge from him as if telling us I am
different this time around."
Kitanoumi oayakata, chairman of the Kyokai
--------------------------------------------------
(On Kotomitsuki's promotion chance after winning his
33rd win in three basho today)
"Having won 11, coupled with one win one loss record
against the yokozuna up to this point, can be viewed
favorably indeed. However his remaining bouts are all
against those ranked lower than him. If he happens to
lose to them, obviously he will leave a negative
image. It's from now on that will really count for
him."
Hanaregoma oyakata, Director of Judging
-----------------------------------------------
(Ultimately the man who must ask the chairman to
convene a special Directors meeting to consider
Kotomitsuki's ozeki promotion. Without the oyakata's
request, no wheel will turn.)
"I will discuss this matter only when everything is
all over."
Kotooshu (7-5) losing to Asashoryu by hatakikomi, 8.5
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I went out hard but he got me up high. I was able to
put my arm in but I couldn't reach his mawashi."
Asashoryu (11-1) over Kotooshu
--------------------------------------
(Still not recovered fully from a cold but showing his
usual unparalled intensity, pulling down Kotooshu
smartly)
"He has such a long reach, I had to be on guard. I was
watching my opponent carefully and executed at the
right moment. I had a great timing today."
(Looking exhausted and showing a rare glimpse of
passive thinking after the bout)
"My cold is getting better but I will be going back to
a hospital right now. When you have a cold, all your
muscles and joints give you a pain. My lower back
hurts too. So my upper body and lower body won't sync
together. Physically I am a wreck right now."
(On having three rikishi vying for the top)
"All I am trying to do is to focus solely on my own
sumo with everything I have. I am not concerned about
the yusho or others. I can't afford to think about
anything or anyone else except my own sumo. It's from
this point on that really mattersl."
Hakuho (11-1) over Kaio by yorikiri, 2.9 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------
(Saved by a mono-ii and getting a rematch after the
judges concluded it was a Dou-tai, "Kaio's body going
out and Hakuho falling down at the same time' -
Hanaregoma oyakata, chief dohyo judge)
"I lacked a sharp finish. As I was leaning over his
body, his tsukiotoshi happened to work so well. I
needed to have one more step at the end."
(On the rematch, there was no contest as Kaio injured
his thigh in the first bout)
"I knew he was hurt so it was really difficult to go
against him."
"But I was relieved that I got the win after seeing
the other two winning there."
"I do feel more exhausted than the last basho,
mentally as well."
(On tying Asashoryu with one loss record)
"I don't think about it all"
Hanaregoma oykata, chief dohyo judge
----------------------------------------------
(On the mono-ii decision)
"It happened all in front of me. I thought it was a
dou-tai right away. The video judge reached the same
conclusion and he didn't have any problem with the
final decision."
Kaio (8-4) losing to Hakuho
------------------------------
(Forced to have a rematch after injuring his left
thigh when he executed Tsukiotoshi against Hakuho, was
barely able to walk back to the dressing room)
"I thought the tsukiotoshi went all right. In the
rematch I couldn't put any weight on it."
(Asked why he did not withdraw before the rematch)
"Well by then in that situation I could hardly say I
am sorry but I have to leave."
"I injured it when I tried to stay in (in the first
bout). I am not sure about tomorrow yet. The question
is how much the pain subsides by tomorrow."
Tomozuna oyakata, Kaio's shisho
---------------------------------------
(On Kaio's kyujo possibility)
"I will leave the decision up to him. He will decide
tomorrow morning. Personally I hope he won't continue
trying to overcome it somehow if it is as bad as it
appears to be. If he decides go come back and can only
display unbearable sumo, then I will have to
reconsider the status myself."
