FWIW, I have been (in)famous for being a "personality" everyone
hates. This goes back to the olden days of dial-up BBS's and USENET of
the late 80's and early 90'. I used to be quite the high-strung, quick
tempered, obnoxious, opinionated, know-it-all. Now I'm just a mellow,
obnoxious, opinionated, know-it-all.

There have actually been studies that show people are much more
confrontational and prone to flaming in a media that doesn't convey visual
and aural indicators, like facial expression and voice inflection. This
is why I have the "dear sweet mother" clause in the FAQ.

    * As with all text based communication, it is often difficult to judge
the emotional context of someone's posts. It is not uncommon on any list
for someone to post a statement in jest or as an off-hand comment and have
it end up starting a flame war. Some people use what are known as
emoticons, or 'smileys', to help convey the intended emotional reference
for their messages. A good rule of thumb is to always read all posts as
if they were sent to you by your mother (or any person you have a strong,
loving relationship with). Even the harshest criticism is blunted and
eased if you read it with the mindset that it is a caring and friendly
comment from your dear ol' mum.

This is the same problem I have with forums in general. It takes
to much time and effort to follow them compared to mailing lists. Well,
for me, anyway.

Ah, people are easy to get along with. Just remember that you're
the only sane person in a world full of lunatics and everything will be
fine.

At keast it wirks for me. ;-)
