If memory serves (with a tip of the Hatlo hat to "Iron Chef"), Hakuho
unashamedly henka'd opponents pretty frequently on his way up the banzuke.
The memorable one against Asashoryu was merely the icing on the cake.



One of us has a very faulty memory, Clay.  I don't recall Hakuho ever trying
a henka on his way up.  On the other hand, I suffered from Hakuho-mania
during that time, and may not have been seeing things clearly.  

It's possible that he felt he had to resort to henka during that period when
he was injured, however.  (Incidentally, it was only during Hakuho's injury
period that Kotooshu was able to reach ozeki.)

Anyway, I'll wait to see what Lon has to say.
