The basho is over, and so is the Torchbearer game. In this game,
contestants answer 8 yes-no questions related to how the Torch will be
passed from rikishi to rikishi during the basho. They all had one chance
to revise their entries before the final day. The Torch is an imaginary
trophy first held by the lowest ranked Makuuchi rikishi on day 1 - it is
passed to the winner of his first match, and in this way the Torch is
passed from one rikishi to another in a difficult to predict way.
Summary of results for the 8 questions - Q1=N since Asashoryuu did not
end up with the torch; Q2=N since the torch ended up in Juuryo; Q3=N
because the torch is more than 8 ranks below M16W; Q4=Y because only one
foreign-born rikishi held the torch; Q5=Y because Toyonoshima won the
torch twice; Q6=N because chikara-mizu receivers had a record of 7-8
making the chikara-mizu unlucky; Q7=Y because the aggregate record of
torchbearers after initially winning the torch is 34-28; Q8=Y because of
Hakurozan's henka on day 3.
We have a winner! The best answers were given by "smk1" and "ntal"
(entries are identified by the first 4 letters of the email address),
both with 7 out of 8 correct. Since the two best answers both have the
same number of right answers, they differ in which answers they got
right, so that difference was used to break the tie. The two answers
differ in Q3 and Q7. 14 entrants got Q3 right. 10 entrants got Q7 right,
so Q7 is the "harder" question, and becomes the tie-breaker here.
Contestant "ntal" got Q7 right but contestant "smk1" got Q7 wrong, so
"ntal" is the winner, with "smk1" in second place. Congratulations to
the winner! I will contact the winner by email to arrange for your
complete basho video disk set. Contestant "ntal" is invited to come
forward on the mailing list and identify himself and receive our
congratulations on winning the first-ever Torchbearer sumo game.
