Tochiozan, Juryo West 2 (8-4) over Ryuo by oshidashi
---------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting kachikoshi in the first basho he was able to
wear an Oicho and getting ever closer to
Makuuchi-hood)
"I was able to go forward so well today and I got into
my sumo style. I will go all out in the last three
days as well."

Ushiomaru (8-4) losing to Kakizoe by oshidashi, 2.5
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Since I already got kachikoshi, it is easier to take.
Now I will be trying not get injured and do all my
best till the end."

Tamansohima (9-3) over Takekaze by tsukidashi, 3.6
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I never expected to do this well after coming back so
soon from kyujo. I only need to win one more in the
last three days to get to a double digit win. I can go
up there much more relaxed."

Toyonoshima (10-2) over Takamisakari by yorikiri, 3.9
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(The shortest sekitori with height of 168 cm, the
first sekitori out of the Kyokai's secondary entrance
exam for those not meeting their minimum height and
weight requirement and now the first secondary exam
rikishi to earn a double digit win as well as being
the first hiramaku to do so this basho. )
"I was able to get a tachiai that I could take full
advantage of my strength. All I am trying to do is to
just keep moving forward. This is the first time I got
a double digit win record so I am extremely happy as
you can imagine."
"I am feeling the pressure too now. I am having
trouble sleeping. I was up till 4 AM today. I am
pretty tense outside the dohyo but at least I have not
been nervous on the dohyo."
"I was training against my heya mate Tokitsuumi-zeki a
little while back and I realized I could no longer win
against him once we got into a yotsu position. So from
that point on, I decided to change my style by
focusing more on going forward without worrying about
getting my opponent's mawashi."
(On the yusho race)
"I don't try to think about such a thing. I am not
thinking about things like I am chasing the yokozuna
but more in terms of I just want to keep on winning. I
certainly don't want to shave my beard. Well, not
quite yet. If I ever get to face an ozeki this basho,
I hope I could move as well as I have been."

Takenawa oyakata (former sekiwake Kotonishiki, known
for his quick powerful sumo despite his small size)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Having a small physique means your opponent has more
trouble catching you. It makes that much more
difficult for them to get to you. To take advantage of
it further, he will need to sharpen his tachiai skills
more so he could press harder against him by leaning
forward with more force. You must know how crucial
that first tackle coming out of tachiai is."

Takamiskari (6-6) losing to Toyonoshima
-----------------------------------------------
(Losing four straight since he had 6-2)
" I really can't explain it well but nothing is
working. I am doing all kinds of things to change my
luck, but nothing working there either."

Kyokutenho (7-5) over Roho by uwatenage, 9.5 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting his seventh win)
"Now I can look forward to my eventual kachikoshi and
have an enjoyable basho."

Kotomitsuki (7-5) over Homoasho by oshidashi, 8.6
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Showing him his stature as a long time sekiwake?)
" I am not in such a comfortable state. But I guess I
was able to take initiative at least."

Miyabiyama (3-9) losing to Kotoshogiku by hatakikomi,
1.0 second
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Fell right into Kotoshogiku's henka)
"Obviously I have no one but myself to blame for but
it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth."

Hakuho (8-4) over Kotooshu by yorikiri, 6.5 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting Kachikoshi and finally escaping from Kadoban
quagmire)
"I still can't get the left mawashi but this one went
pretty much how I wanted to go. I was able to decide
it without stopping."
"I wanted to win eight straight before the basho but I
realized that an kachikoshi isn't such an easy thing
to get. This basho feels so long already. When I lost
my second bout earlier, I thought to myself what's
happening. One time I thought I may even suffer a
Makekoshi this basho. But then I realized I needed to
keep going by believing in myself. After all I have
done enough training prior to the basho. "

Kotooshu (8-4) losing to Hakuho
-------------------------------------
"I was able to reach over to his mawashi but he got my
mawashi with both hands. I can't remember much after
that."

Ama (8-4) over Kaio by okuridashi, 6.4 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------
"It went exactly the way I wanted today."
(With his father passing away in a traffic accident
and leaving to Mongolia, lack of training has hurt)
"Considering all that happened, if I may be allowed to
be less humble, I want to say to myself I have done
well. I always try to compete with more intensity than
my opponent."
(On his father's death)
"Please don't write so much about it. I don't want
people to feel sorry for me."

Kaio (6-6) losing to Ama
----------------------------
(Now in danger of not getting Kachikoshi)
"I think I kept my back too high. I felt like I was
standing upright at the tachiai. We only have three
more days. There is no point leaving anything in
reserve now so I will do everything to get a good sumo
in the final three days."

Tochiazuma (5-7) over Kisenosato by oshidashi, 9.1
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Avoiding Makekoshi by setting aside Kisenosato)
"I was able to go after him when I could. I was
staying in a stationary position, just watching my
opponent. I will need to take more initiatives and go
after him.."
(The injured knee screaming loudly by now?)
"Oh I am all too aware of it. But only three more days
to go. I have to go all out with what I am capable
right now."

Kisenosato (6-6) losing to Tochiazuma
---------------------------------------------
"I should have pulled him around from the right. This
loss will be really painful."

Chiyotaikai (8-4) losing to Asashoryu by oshidashi,
5.2 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I rushed myself too much. Sure I got beaten but I
also got enough out of this bout that I feel like I
could get a win tomorrow."

Asashoryu (11-1) over Chiyotaikai
----------------------------------------
(Even after getting fierce shoving from Chiyotaikai)
"I did panic a little bit coming out of the tachiai.
But I was really determined never ever to back down
from his pushing. I thought my lower body stayed
solid. While watching his Tsupparis carefully, I tried
not to get carried away by his pace. "
"But you know lately it's getting to be more difficult
to get the left in and grab the front mawashi."
(On the yusho)
"Yeah, it's finally in my horizon. But I can't afford
to think about anything or anyone else. I don't have
anything extra to worry about other people. I have to
keep winning myself. "
