I have to agree with you, Joe, after watching the videos on Barbara's site.
I also think that at times, a henka is not really planned by some rikishi,
but just sort of flows with the tachiai movements and perceptions. I mean
this, in general, for those who normally conduct "good" sumo, as Ama does.
Having said that, I also believe that the choice of ultimate kimarite is
also determined by the flow of the bout. Sure, a guy can think "I want to
win this by, say, hikitoshi", but events during the bouts themselves can
easily abort a planned kimarite effort and end up with one that may seem
meant to inflict pain, but is not intentionally done so. I would cite the
Asashoryu/Ama bout. I firmly do not believe that Asa thought "let me inflict
pain on one of the rikishi that I most like and respect", but that the
movement came out naturally from his instincts.
Just my 2 yen's worth.

First off, I am as far from a "knowledgeable" Sumo fan as anyone. I
couldn't hold a birthday candle to Doreen or Barb x2 or the extremely
well named Joe K (and anyone else I'm forgetting due to brain damage).
I couldn't light the candle for someone who couldn't hold a candle.
That being said...
I've been watching this match for a little while and I think that
Ama's
move was maybe on the cusp of a henka. The overhead shot seems to show
that Ama came straight at Oosh then, just on contact, he did a step
through and twist. I guess it's in the spirit of a henka but it seemed
like a slick move to me.
