Asashoryu is the sole makuuchi leader now as he beat Miyabiyama for the
26th time while the two Kataonami-beya leaders Tamakasuga and
Tamanoshima both lost, to Toyonoshima and Yoshikaze. Toyonoshima
improved to 7-2 with this win as did ozeki Chiyotaikai with a win over
fellow ozeki Kaio, while Takamisakari failed to do so with a loss
against ozeki Kotooshu, the fifth in five tries.

Kasugao is holding his own rather well in mid maegashira as he is 5-4
now with a win against Kokkai, using the rare tottari kimarite,
surprisingly his first ever tottari win given that he already had 43
kotenage wins and tottari is somewhat similar. The young Mongolian
Kakuryu (21 years old) also is a positive surprise with 4-5 after a win
against Futeno. Of course he had an 8-7 in his makuuchi debut at the
same rank last basho, but by now positive debut effects possibly have
worn off and with reduced size of sanyaku the same rank actually means
stronger opponents this basho.

Juryo leader Kobo lost to Goeido with kozumatori, a very rare kimarite
which has so far happened only once in makuuchi (Chiyotenzan, Haru 2001)
and once in sandanme (Shinnishiki, Nagoya 2005). Kobo still stays the
sole juryo leader as the two pursuers Tochiozan and Toyohibiki lost too.
Now there are three more pursuers with Kaiho who is 6-3 after a 0-3
start, Tochisakae and Shunketsu. Wakanoho lost to Hakuba, against whom
he is 0-3 in hon-basho (with one playoff win), and both shin-juryo are
3-6 and need a 4-2 finish to avoid instant demotion.
