Iwakiyama (1-1) over Kakizoe by hatakikomi, 6.8
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat)
"I knew I had one foot in so I figured I won all the
way. (Seeing the gyoji's decision going the other way)
then I thought what's the deal here?"
(The gyoji's decision overturned and getting a win
from the opponent he has won 12 straight.)
"I must say I had it coming today and I felt I finally
would lose as I was really getting pressed hard. But
you know I guess there is such a thing as being lucky
against some opponent you know."

Homasho (0-2) losing to Baruto by oshidashi, 21.2
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Two straight losses to start the basho)
"I had my upper body going squarely against his. In
the last two days I have not been stepping foward. The
fact I am not going hard against my oppoent is the
biggest reason for my loss."

Dejima (1-1) over Hakuho by oshidashi, 2.3 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Beating Hakuho by staying low and never giving him an
opportunity to regroup)
"I was able to hit hard so I just went out taking
initiatives all the way. I was able to go foward
really well too."
"I thought I couldn't beat him unless I'd go out as if
I'd been given a training session from the ozeki but I
am really pleased that I was to display my best sumo
today."

Hakuho (1-1) losing to Dejima
-----------------------------------
"I guess I may have rushed too much."

Tokitenku (1-1) over Kotooshu by watashikomi, 5.5
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Grabbing Kotooshu's foot)
"I wasn't going to let go of it for whatever reason."
(On arm pushed to the ozeki's throat)
"Actually I wasn't attempting to push to the throat
but the ozeki is so big when you go for pushing, the
arms naturally tend to reach high up there."

Kotooshu (1-1) losing to Tokitenku
-----------------------------------------
(Asked if his injured right knee was targetted)
"Why are you asking me?"
(Have been receiving complaints from his heya's
supporters about the henka win against Kisenosato the
previous day and which is making him no mood to talk
either.)

Kitanoumi oyakata, chair of the Kyokai
--------------------------------------------
"It's not losing that concerns me much as that happens
inevitably. It's the way they (Kotooshu/Hakuho) lost
today that won't give you any confidence at all if
they can seriously keep staying with the yokozuna."

Roho (1-1) over Tochiazuma by yorikiri, 8.3 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------
"From the tachiai I didn't feel any pressure coming
from the ozeki. I guess he just can't put any power
into his legs to stay in."

Tochiazuma (0-2) losing to Roho
--------------------------------------
(Losing the second straight, becoming apparent that
the injury is far worse than believed)
"It's as if the leg is not my own. I can't figure out
how I can generate any power with it at all."
(Asked if he was thinking of pulling out)
"Not at all. You may gain something positive from
tomorrow. You never know really, don't you? "
(Still peppered with kyujo questions from reporters)
"Listen, guys. Here it is. I will be here tomorrow as
well. The end of the story."

Kaio (2-0) over Kisenosato by yorikiri, 32.7 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------
(Sole ozeki with no loss, getting a win despite having
some difficulty against the opponent he never liked
facing.)
"I feel I am moving well. But by no means it was easy.
It was really close."
"To be honest there was a bad air (seeing other ozekis
losing) but I figure that it's nothing to do with what
I have to do."

Kisenosato (0-2) losing to Kaio
----------------------------------
(The only Makuuchi rikishi who can celebrate this
holiday for those turned or turning 20 years old this
year. There was a moment when he got Kaio's uwate
off.)
"Yeah right that was the time I had to go after him.
And I was thinking of it too. Ah...what can I do now?"

Asashoryu (2-0) over Kotoshogiku by yorikiri, 13.2
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Kotoshogiku almost went into his favorite,
Gaburi-yori to no avail)
"He started coming to me really close with his chest
forward so for one moment I amost went into a mini-panic."
