Only one comment after reading that: the original posting to this 
thread misrepresented the Japan Times article as being *written* by 
Mark Schreiber.  It was not.  It was a pair of pieces from the weekly 
tabloids *translated* by Mark Schreiber (his real name).

Mark has been doing these "latest dirt from the dirt magazine" 
translations for quite a few years now, for the JT and, if I'm not 
mistaken, the MDN's "WaiWai" column, adding a bit of breathy 
transitional material to the translations in keeping with the heavy 
breathing of the original pieces.
