Nobody has to make up an excuse to blow off the jungyo.  After a few
years, all sumo wrestlers are beat up to the point where almost any
doctor would consider them "injured" for any of numerous reasons, and
order them to take a few weeks rest.

The difference is that those guys had enough sense to lie low and not
be caught out in public doing something that would embarass the sumo
world.
