Just to add a quick comment, as I stated previously,
the Hawaiians didn't have the same problem Asashoryu
is having with the Kyokai, so if it is xenophobia it
must be selective xenophobia. The only problems I
remember with the Hawaiians was with Konishiki when he
won 2 out of 3 Basho and didn't get promoted to
Yokozuna. He was quoted as claiming racism against the
Kyokai in the New York Times. Interestingly, Konishiki
went to the Kyokai and spoke with them about the issue
and completely turned around on the story and denied
that he actually spoke with anyone about it. Konishiki
never had another incident with the Kyokai until he
retired. In other words, unlike Asashoryu, he was not
a repeat offender and learned from his mistake. The
Kyokai have repeatedly proved that they have been
consist with promotions ever since the Futahaguro
incident. Takanohana before being promoted to Yokozuna
had won 6 Basho, None them were consecutive until the
6th and 7th in September and November of 1994.
Xenophobia is not likely in this case.
