Asashoryu broke two of the biggest taboos in not sumo, but in Japanese
society. You don't disrespect your patrons...but if you do, you
certainly don't do it in public. Asashoryu showed brazen disrespect
to the thousands of Japanese fans hoping to see him in person,
incredible stupidity in not thinking that this public affair would
remain unknown outside of Mongolia, or most likely, both.
If the NSK did not punish Asashoryu severely for this infraction, they
would suffer far more damage than a few empty seats in the Kokugikan.

It was probably those mitigating circumstances that kept Asashoryu
from being forced out of sumo altogether.
Hopefully Kotomitsuki will take full advantage of this power play opportunity.
