[sumo] Talk about excuses

If anyone should have sat out the last day, it SHOULD have been the
yokozuna. His knee was severely injured during his loss to Kisenosato. The
flesh colored elastic bandage covered up the damage until the last couple of
days, when the discoloration starting creeping up over his knee. He never,
NEVER made mention of his injury, ala Tochiazuma, who speaks about his own
"condition" day in and day out, win or lose, and who is the classic boy who
cried wolf. After each day's bout, the yokozuna was sitting at home for
hours on end with tea and other compresses on his knee, and his trainer just
looking by, helpless, since there was no physical therapy that could be used
at this time. As a former marathon runner, having a few injuries myself, I
remember the "solution" to injuries, RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression and
Elevation, with Rest an important component. The yokozuna was bale to use
the ICE part to a very limited and not useful extent, but the rest? Uh uh.
As reported in the day 15 quotes, Asa finally said that he could hardly
walk, but, and these are my words, not his - went up on the dohyo every day
as though he were "genki".

I may be biased, but my admiration and respect for the man went through the
roof this time. Plus, he did not use his injury in any way as an excuse for
any perceived sub-normal performances, as biased-himself Kokonoe oyakata
(whom I love) insinuated.

You Asashoryu haters will no doubt have something to say, but the yokozuna's
intelligence, strength, versatility, and realization and practice of hinkaku
cannot be denied. Steroid-free, meat- and- veggies eating, self-respect and
pride contribute to his greatness.

Hi!

<SNIP>

The point about Asashoryu possibly choosing to sit out the last bout
is pretty meaningless in this thread, I think. ;-)
