As with the Nagoya Basho, scoring was really tight this basho, resulting
in no really outstanding records. Fujisan was the only rikishi in Makuuchi
or Juryo to achieve an equivalent record of 12-3 or better. Also, the
Jonokuchi division was the highest scoring division this basho. This was
only the second time in the last 8 basho that one of the lower divisions
outscored the sekitori of the top division.

KK/MK Dividing Lines:
Makuuchi: 1265.95
Juryo: 1266.28
Makushita: 1265.37
Jonokuchi: 1292.96

MAKUUCHI: Fujisan captured the Makuuchi Yusho by a comfortable 90 point
margin over Tomoe. Congrats to him on his first top-division championship.

Out of our Ozeki, only Doitsuyama managed a KK, and that by only a couple of
points. Both Akemisamaru and Heruwejima were MK and will be kadoban in
November. Former Ozeki Mikaazuma fell short in an attempt to return to the
rank, missing the required 10-5 record by 25 points.

Of the 10 Sekiwake and Komusubi on the banzuke for this basho, only two (the
aforementioned Mikaazuma and K1e Tamanaogijima) were able to achieve KK. So
there will be a big cleanout of those ranks on the next banzuke.

MAKUSHITA: Mariomaru not only captured the Makushita Yusho and an automatic
promotion to Juryo, the Ms9w also had the highest score of any player in all
the divisions combined. Congratulations on a great performance.

As oppossed to last basho, where the promotion/demotion situation was really
complicated, this basho the picture is entirely clear. With only two regular
demotions from Juryo and two demotions due to non-kosho abscence, there are
4 openings in the 2nd division. Mariomaru, Mariotoki, Kaiowaka and
Shiyonofuji will fill those openings.
