It has nothing to do with the 'glory days' of the emperor or the empire.
It has nothing to do with being over 59.
The British have had their royal houses come & go depending on battles, marriages & treason. Their empire was mighty, and is no longer.
The Japanese emperor is one house, continuous & was probably equal to Jesus in Japanese eyes. Tell a Christian that Jesus is no longer a deity, & you might get the same reaction most Japanese had after WWII. But the emperor is still there to represent the people & intercede with the gods.
That's the only way I can explain it.
