I'll do my best to spell it out, though I don't know nearly as much about
Japanese culture as others here. So forgive me if I get some things wrong.
The Japanese monarchy isn't like other monarchies. They aren't just
head of state. They aren't figureheads. They *literally* embody Japanese
culture. Before the end of WWII, the emperor was a god. This isn't
figurative. It's literal.
The smartest thing MacArthur did was to demand that the emperor
renounce godship. Why? Because the Japanese people would then
regard MacArthur as a god (who is more powerful than a god?). Then
he could do pretty much anything he wanted.
Japan wouldn't exist as Japan without the royal family. To state otherwise
is to be ignorant of Japanese culture.
Or at least that is my impression (being mostly ignorant myself). It's
a bit difficult for my brain to really handle this as it's stuffed with Western
views and values. But I'm trying to learn. If possible, I'd welcome
corrections from people who know better....
