[non sumo] Hanai relationships: was [sumo] Jan Rowan, Akebono's mother

After reading the article, I noticed that Mrs Rowan had two 'hanai'
children.  After some googling, I've learnt that it is a kind of
adoption.

Could someone enlighten further?
