Goeido (8-7) over Ryuho by kirikaeshi
----------------------------------------------
(In his first Juryo basho, winning the last four bouts
after recording 4 wins and 7 losses to get kachikoshi)
"Since I was at the edge already I felt I might as
well go for it regardless of what happens. In Juryo,
your opponent will try to outmaneuver you at tachiai,
and try to get you offbalance. I want to learn how to
go with my own pace. Now that the basho is over I feel
it ended rather quick."
Baruto (10-5) over Tochinohana by kotenage
-----------------------------------------------------
(Getting his 10th win)
"My objective this basho was kachikoshi. Now thinking
about the year, I felt it passed by so quickly."
Kotomitsuki (9-6) over Roho by sukuinage
-------------------------------------------------
"I regret that I could not get to double digit level.
But I finally graduated from 8 wins"
Kotooshu (10-5) over Tochiazuma by yorikiri
------------------------------------------------------
"It's finally over now. It's been so long. My goal
next year is to not to get injuired."
Hakurozan (7-8) over Kasuganishiki by yorikiri
-----------------------------------------------------------
(After losing eight straight, finishing by winning
seven straight)
"The fact I l already had a makekoshi meant, I was
able to keep coming back without worry about it. Even
if I fall down to Juryo, if I do my best, I know I can
always come back up here."
Homasho (12-3) losing to Kotoshogiku by hatakikomi
---------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting two Sanshos Kanto and Gino sho at the same
time in his first Sansho win.)
"I am really pleased knowing my efforts have been
recognized. With the award money, I want to do
something for my parents. I should realize I will be
facing top rank rikishis from now on, so I will need
to really sharpen up my tachiai skills. I am weaker at
tachiai so my opponent can push into me. It has been a
good learning experience against going after the top
rank rikishis and that can help me more next basho."
Kotoshogiku (10-5) over Homasho
----------------------------------------
(Awarded a Sansho)
"It's been my goal for the year."
(Rather than going with his well known technique of
'Gabrui-yori (wrapping his both arms around his
opponent's body and pushing him out while shaking him
down)', taking an easy way out of pulling this day)
"Well you know even if I displayed a good sumo today
and lost, there would have been no komusubi. So I
figured perhaps just for today, I could try to win by
pulling. Being promoted to Sanyaku means a great deal
to me."
Dejima (10-5) over Toyonoshima by oshidashi
--------------------------------------------------------
(Getting double digit wins for the first time in 13
bashos)
"I have been able to really sprint out from tachiai
this basho. I want to keep diplaying a Dejima-like
sumo next year as well."
Miyabiyama (8-7) over Kaio by oshidashi
------------------------------------------------
(By winning his eighth on the Senshuraku this basho,
managed to get kachikoshi all six bashos this year)
"I should be happy about that. Of course winning the
yusho every basho can be amazing too. Personally it
has been a goodl satisifying year for me."
Kaio (10-5) losing to Miyabiyama
---------------------------------------
(Unable to get the mawashi from Miyabiyama and losing)
"It left a rather bad afte-taste but I've done pretty
well(gaining double digit wins) this basho."
"You keep saying if I fall down, I will be retiring.
But I just don't want to finish my career as it is. I
will be doing my best to come back here again next
year as an active rikishi. But I do know physically it
all will be one basho at a time."
Takamisakari (10-5) losing to Asasekiryu by oshidashi
------------------------------------------------------------------
(Unable to achieve a new personal best of 11)
"Everyone around me kept talking about it so I started
thinking about it too. But then again I am glad that I
have been able to leave with such a good record in a
long while."
Kakuryu (8-7) over Otsukasa by yorikiri
------------------------------------------------
(Getting kachikoshi in his Makuuchi debut basho)
"When I got to 6 wins 7 losses, I decided I should not
worry about wins and losses anymore. This really
helped me gain more confidence."
"I know I will need to gain more weight (currently at
132 kg). I will be trying to learn how to keep moving
forward ."
Kisenosato (8-7) over Kakizoe by yorikiri
------------------------------------------------
(Normally known for his audaciousness, showing a hint
of tears today, feeling a sense of accomplishment
battling an injury and getting kachikoshi all on his
own as the last basho his eighth win was a fusen)
"I am really happy that I was able to keep a Sanyaku
rank. I will come back the next basho having my injury
healed fully (injured his right elbow on his day 8
bout against Asashoryu)."
Asashoryu (15-0) over Chiyotaikai by yorikiri
-----------------------------------------------------
"I lost to him last basho so I went out with all I
had. I was thinking to pull him up but it just didn'
work out."
"I feel great winning all 15 days. I won the yusho
yesterday but I wanted to win today because it was the
final day. This year it's been like weather for me.
There were sunny days and rainy days. "
"For yokozuna, there is nothing less than yusho. I
have a pride of being yokozuna so the only thing for
me is to get the yusho."
"I want to keep my winning streaking going throughout
the next year."
Takanohana oyakata
------------------------
(Now Asashoryu getting five all-win yushos and
overtaking him)
"We live in another age. I feel nothing to feel sorry
aboutl."
Kitanoumi oyakata, Kyokai chairman
-------------------------------------------
"One can rarely get an opportunity to win a yusho by
winning all the bouts. There are only a few who
accomplished the feat. Definitely it has a special
value."
"I have a feeling he will never get beaten easily by
young up and coming rikishis as you've seen him go
against Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku. It's as if hee
does not want them gaining any confidence over him.
When we consider his age, he should continue to excel
through the next year."
Kokonoe oyakata
---------------------
"He gets stronger and stronger as a basho progresses,
It shows he can control himself all thoroughout
15 days."
Kumagatani oyakata
-------------------------
(On Hakuho)
"Hakuho should be participating in the winter jyungyo.
He is young so he can recover from injuries much
quicker. He is already starting a light exercise
regimen as his cast came off already. I think by
seeing other rikishis at the jungyo, it should give
him more motivation to get better."
(Howerver Hakuho won't be doing any Moushiai training
sessions but will be doing dohyo-iri with other
sekitoris.)
