Asashoryu completed his 19th yusho with a win against Chiyotaikai,
getting an extra bonus for his fifth zensho yusho. This was his first
zensho yusho since Natsu 2005. Kotooshu will take over the top ozeki
position for the first time in his career as he won against Tochiazuma
while Kaio lost to Miyabiyama.
Kotomitsuki beat Roho to break his string of six 8-7 basho with a 9-6
and regain the east sekiwake position while Miyabiyama stays sekiwake on
the west side as he got a late kachi-koshi.
Homasho lost to Kotoshogiku but still gets the jun-yusho with two wins
to spare as he finished 12-3 with the next 9 rikishi coming in at 10-5.
The joi-jin Kotoshogikun and Dejima are also among them as they won
today, making them eligible for a komusubi slot. But it is questionable
if they get it because two komusubi are kachi-koshi with Roho and
Kisenosato, and neglecting the extra komusubi slots makes the next
banzuke easier because there aren't enough candidates from juryo and a
M16 rank would allow more make-koshi maegashira to fall back. Tokitenku
had a great finish with eight wins after a 1-6 start to get a 9-6 in the
joi-jin at M3e but he sure won't get a promotion to sanyaku.
Homasho also got his first ever sansho, even two with the kanto-sho and
the gino-sho. Kotoshogiku also got his first sansho, a gino-sho. No
shukun-sho was awarded as the only rikishi with an outstanding
performance against yokozuna and ozeki has been Futeno who went 3-1
against the ozeki and gave the yokozuna a good bout, but Futeno finished
far from kachi-koshi at 5-10.
There are a lot of demotion candidates indeed with Kyokushuzan (intai),
Tamanoshima, Hokutoriki, Katayama, Otsukasa, Asofuji, Tosanoumi,
Ushiomaru and Kitazakura. At least Hakurozan isn't among them as he
completed the basho turnaround with a 7-8 after the 0-8 start.
There's no way to find nine promotion candidates from juryo, but at
least four are sure to get promoted with Jumonji, Yoshikaze (8-7 with
the win against Katayama), Tokitsuumi and Kasuganishiki. Unfortunately
there really aren't any good candidates behind them so I think five of
the above-mentioned maegashira will get lucky and stay, possibly
Tamanoshima, Otsukasa, Asofuji, Ushiomaru and Tosanoumi.
Tamaasuka won his last bout against Raiko, but it might be too late to
stay with 7-8 at the lowest rank. Definitely down are Mokonami,
Hokutoiwa and Kanbayashi with Daimanazuru possibly thanking
Kyokushuzan's intai for an extra position.
