Kaio (10-3) over Kotomitsuki by yorikiri, 35.7 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
(Taking care of the opponent he has not won in three
bashos and gaining the first double digit wins in a
year)
"I don't have anything else except that (right uwate)
move. It's beem a while since I got the double digit
too. The bouts I lost, the opponent got my mawashi.
Today he didn't."
"I want to complete the basho without losing the
intensity, focusing solely on my sumo. It's not over
yet."
Homasho (11-2) over Kyokutenho by oshidashi, 5.9
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Withstanding Kyokutenho's sukuinage thow with one
foot)
"I've been doing all I can with nothing left to spare.
All I could handle is the opponent in front of me, the
bout I am in. I believe in never ever giving up and
keep on staying with your opponnent. That's what I
need to do in each and every one of the bouts."
(On losing his first ozeki bout the day before)
"The shisho pointed out how I was all tensed up and
how slow I was coming out of tachiai yesterday. I
replayed the video so many times last night and that
helped me calmed down."
(On a Sansho quest)
"I will have to keep doing what I am doing without
giving up."
Dewanoumi oyakata, Kyushu Basho Director
----------------------------------------------------
(Having been bombarded daily on Kyushu basho
attendance by media and looking relieved seeing
Homasho winning)
"By Homasho winning for us today, there will be a
definite difference in the excitement level tomorrow.
To tell you the truth, we honestly did not want to
have the basho decided today. We all need to bow down
deeply to Mr. Homasho today. Thank goodness for Mr
Homasho."
Kyokutenho (8-5) losing to Homasho
--------------------------------------------
(Losing to 25 year old Homasho)
"I used to always beat a guy I never faced before. He
has solid lower body and good legs. I was going
against him pretty good too. I thought it was a good
sumo. "
(On not able to help out the fellow Mongolian, the
yokozuna)
"Hey when you say something like than, my knees
buckle. Anyway I don't know what happened...maybe I am
just getting too old."
Iwakiyama (1-12) over Toyozakura by oshitaoshi, 12.9
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Finally his first win this basho)
"There were times I felt like giving up. If I got
beaten badly today, I was prepared to talk to the
shisho about going on kyujo. But I couldn't quit
without even winning one bout. Both Kaio and
Tochiazuma-zeki expressed their concern for me. I
really appreciate their kindness."
Chiyotaikai (9-4) losing to Kotooshu, by uwatenage 6.5
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I lost because he had longer legs. My right arm hurts
so much, I can't do any decent tsupparis."
Aminishiki (5-8) losing to Futeno by yoritaoshi, 7.7
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting make-koshi in his first komusubi basho)
"Just as I thought I was finally seeing a way out to
kachikoshi...I feel dejected. But when you have not
been training, this is all I could expect. I just want
to go home and go to bed early."
Kotoshogiku (8-5) over Kisenosato by yorikiri, 9.7
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting his kachikoshi by beating his rival
Kisenosato)
"I am so glad. I've done so well. I am very, very
happy. Especially considering against Hagiwara
(Kisenosato). So happy, I can't stop laughing."
(Learned from the advice given to him by the same
Ichimon's Otowayama oyakata, former ozeki Takanonami
after he lost to the yokozuna on Day 6 even after
getting his favorite 'hidari-yotsu' . Otowayama
oyakata told him, "You are not using your right hand
well. If you try to drop your right shoulder more, you
should be able to win more." Kotoshogiku went back to
the fundamentals of yotsu-sumo and
received the payback right away today).
"I am so happy I was able to get a kachikoshi in
Fukuoka (where he is from). Now I can even see a
prospect of Sanyaku. Now only two more to go. I will
go out with everything I have."
Kisenosato (6-7) losing to Kotoshogiku
--------------------------------------------
"It hasn't ended yet. I just have to go out with all.
I just have to take care of what has to be done."
Asashoryu (13-0) over Tochiazuma by yorikiri, 16.7
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"As he comes down low, I figured I watch him carefully
and I'd go out low myself. Now my sumo is getting to
be right where I want it to be. "
(Not getting the yusho this day as Homasho won against
Kyokutenho)
"Exactly. You know I was hoping Tenho would do a good
job for us tonight. ..Hahahaha. No matter. No
problem."
(Facing Kotooshu on Day 14)
"It should be a great match. He beat me here in Kyushu
last year....You'd better believe I am so looking
forward to facing him again tomorrow."
Tochiazuma (9-4) losing to Asashoryu
-----------------------------------------------
(Refusing to go on kyujo despite extreme pain and
crippling injury only to face the yokozuna and getting
overwhelmed)
"Today I did the best I could under the circumstance.
You battle various adversity in life and take some
blows. I don't believe there is nothing wrong with
that." (And let the record show, he did it his way and
cue in the music.)
Gokenzan, 33, (2-5) Sandanme East 10
--------------------------------------------
(The last remaining rikishi in Takanohana beya with
sekitori experience)
"I wanted to go longer but my knees got so bad....I
can't compete in the way I really wanted. I simply
couldn't continue anymore (with tears welling in his
eyes)"
(Gokezan made his dohyo debut at the 1988 Haru basho
and made Juryo debut at the 1995 Haru basho. He had 11
Juryo bashos. His danpatsu ceremony is to be held at a
Tokyo area hotel on December 10. With his departure,
there are only seven Takanohana beya rikishis left.
Gokenzan was the last rikishi from Kagawa Prefecture
and he plans to go back to Takamatsu City to look for
a job.)

Kochi University).
"I couldn't win even one bout using my favorite
Migi-yotsu and I wasn't moving at all but I am really
relieved that I was able to finish it with a good
record."
"I went to an university hoping to find myself a nice
career but instead I ended up selecting the most
insecure job of all."
"I want people to know there are people who will
undertake something as odd as what I am doing now. I
will be happy if I can play a part in generating more
grassroot interest in sumo."
Chiganoura oyakata (former sekiwake Masudayama)
"I felt he was competing with a good form. He should
have any trouble getting bigger (after tagging along
with the heya's senior rikishis, Masumeidai gained 7
kg in one week to 117 kg)".
Ichinoyama
---------------
(On Masumeidai)
"Rather than trying to rise up, he wants to motivate
himself, knowing he is attracting all the attention."
