So here are a few tidbits before I can sojourn off to
the Jundland Wastes again:

Kitazakura (2-8) losing to Toyonoshima by yorikiri, 1
minute 6.5 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing after over one minute of sumo)
"I circled and circled around so many times, it was a
sumo merry-go-round. I can't stand that I lost it
after all that. But then again finding myself this
upset, I'd rather like it. You know it's just me. I
love it when I am like this."

Aminishiki (4-6) over Roho by yorikiri, 8.5 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------
(Finally both winning, and Aminishiki matching the
record with his brother, Asofuji, for the first time
this basho)
"I figured I'd lose today as I saw my big brother
winning today. As for having the same record, you have
to mention it, don't you?"

Asashoryu (10-0) over Kotomitsuki by sukuinage, 9.1
seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Had a bit trouble against his ring patsy, Kotomitsuki
but no matter still notching his 62nd win this year,
now the third rikishi ever to record the most wins in
year for fifth straight year in a row, following Taiho
and Kitanoumi)
"Sometimes if you have so much luck against another
guy, you start wondering this could be it, I may not
be so lucky this time around but I managed to prevail
today so I feel great."
"I've got quite a few medals already so I guess I have
to wear it on my back."
(On his rivals)
"I want the higher rank guys to stay more competitive.
It's really crucial that we have to keep on winning.
What's going on with everyone? Is Tochiazuma all right
(of his left knee)?"
(The only one remaining without a loss)
"Now comes the most important part of the basho."

Kitanoumi oyakata, Kyokai chairman
-----------------------------------------
(On Asashoryu)
"He is stil 25 years old so I am sure he will continue
to break more records."
(Seeing ozekis falling apart again)
"Well that's the way it goes...what can I do? Not much
chance left if you dropped two already. It's looking a
lot like another Asashoryu yusho. But we really need
to have at least one ozeki to stay in badly."

Kotomitsuki (7-3) losing to Asashoryu
-------------------------------------------
(Since the 2002 Kyushu basho, suffering his 23rd
consecutive loss against Asashoryu)
"You know it's just one more step before I can get it.
I am hoping to beat him even just once before I
retire..."

Homasho (9-1) over Baruto by yorikiri, 3.7 seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------
(Beating Baruto the Gentle Giant)
"He pulled so I figured that was my best opportunity.
I was really psyched up today. I feel fantastic."
(Still with one loss, and on the yusho race)
"Yes, I will do my best. I will have to go out doing
my best each and every bout."
(On Asashoryu)
"I faced him once (when he was in his second year at
Saitama Sakae High school when Asashoryu was with
Meitoku Gijuku High) but I lost to him."
"As for the rest of this basho...I will just have to
keep on doing what I have been doing."

Shikoroyama oyakata, Homasho's shisho
------------------------------------------------
"One thing I am telling him is that regardless of who
the opponent is never lose by heart."

Kokonoe oyakata, Associate Director, Judging
-----------------------------------------------------
(On Homasho)
"If he can keep on with the current pace, he may even
face an ozeki. Of course for that to happen, the
opponent must still have an equivalent record at that
point too."

Baruto (8-2) losing to Homasho
------------------------------------
"My taichiai was awful. I have no idea why I ended up
pulling him. I wasn't able to move naturally. Not much
I can do about it now."

Chiyotaikai (8-2) losing to Miyabiyama by oshidashi,
4.2 seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I lost at the tachiai. I couldn't get inside...A bad
tachiai."

Kokkai (1-9) over Iwakiyama by okuridashi, 3.1 seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Prevailing over still no-win Iwakiyama to get his
first win this basho)
"Ah...somehow, finally. I was starting to feel as if
I'd keep losing forever."

Tamanoshima (2-8) losing to Asofuji by hatakikomi, 9.6
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Injuring his groin, contemplating kyujo)
"I may be able to stay in if I could endure the pain
but I am not sure that's the right thing to do. I will
have to think about it some more."
(Tamanoshima has never gone on kyujo since his dohyo
debut at the 1998 Haru basho).

Tochiazuma (8-2) losing to Dejima by hatakikomi, 2.9
seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Aggravated his old left knee injury)
"I felt my left knee buckled. I don't really know how
and where it happened. I will see what happens
overnight."

Tamanoi oyakata (Tochiazuma's shisho)
------------------------------------------
"He looks like he is icing the area but we will decide
in the morning."

And it's the morning, so what's the story?

* Tamanoshima is going on kyujo now.
