Homasho (8-1) over Ushiomaru by hikiotoshi, 4.0
seconds
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Notching his quicketst Makuuchi kachikoshi to date
and the first Hiramaku kachikoshi today)
"After been in Makuuchi for a while, I have better
idea of each rikishi's strength. As a result I have
not been pushed over easily."
(Any secret of success so far?)
"There is an Onsen spring near our camp here so I made
it my habit to take a bath there every day. I feel so
refreshed after the bath."
(On facing his rival Baruto on Day 10)
"I will go against him like any other rikishi, nothing
different. This basho I am going for double digit
wins."
Futeno (4-5) over Tochinonada by yorikiri, 31.8
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"You know if you give Tochinonada-zeki a firm left
grip, you will be in for one heck of trouble. And that
was exactly what happened today. It was all struggle
throughtout. I am rather surprised at myself to stay
in as long as I did as there were some close moments.
I got the win today because I was moving around a
little better than he was."
Kotomitsuki (7-2) losing to Dejima by tsukiotoshi, 1
minute 11.1 seconds
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Suffering his second loss, losing to Dejima whom he
normally has no problem)
"I thought if I could have stopped him at the tachiai.
But then I couldn't get the right...shitate. I wasn't
moving at all."
Kotooshu (6-3) over Aminishiki by uwatenage, 3.5
seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Happy about the win and smiling towards photograpers
rushing towards him after the bout)
"What are you going to do wtih so many photos you take
every day? Don't you think, maybe, half a dozen will
be enough?"
Kaio (8-1) losing to Tochiazuma by yorikiri, 8.4
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------
"It's not that I hesitated or anything but I just
couldn't get into my own sumo move. I got my
kachikoshi and escaped from Kadoban but it doesn't
mean it's over at all, the job is done. I can't let
the basho end like this."
Tochiazuma (8-1) over Kaio
---------------------------------
(Facing the most popular man in Fukuoka)
"Going in, I knew perfectly well, this was going to be
my 'Away' game. "
"I have been analyzing the past bouts and I realized
more often than not, he'd get the left in rather than
with right uwate. After seeing the Dejima bout last
night, that was the one thing I kept in my mind today.
I have gone to enough de-geiko prior to the basho so I
have been moving not badly at all this basho. I just
want to keep chipping away to make the basho more
exciting."
Kitanoumi oyakata, Kyokai chairman
------------------------------------------
(On Tochiazuma win)
"If Tochiazuma to win against Kaio, this was the only
way he could have. It was a very smart attack by him.
I guess from Kaio's point of view, Tochiazuma presents
himself quite a bit different from other rikishis."
Chiyotaikai (8-1) over Kisenosato by tsukidashi, 3.0
seconds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"After getting haggled at the tachiai, I actually got
more relaxed. He was quite a bit off the shikiri line,
so I figured he'd come out with a henka. As I am
moving well this basho, I was confident I could stay
in so there was nothing to worry about. The real game
starts now that I got my kachikoshi. Prior to the
basho, I trained a lot with the other two ozekis, so I
feel I am moving much better. "
"You know it's up to us, veterans, to make this basho
more exciting."
Kisenosato (4-5) losing to Chiyotaikai
----------------------------------------------
(Now with more losses than with wins after a petty
henka loss)
"I know it was really bad. It could become a
habit...."
Baruto (8-1) over Kakizoe by oshidashi, 2.5 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting the quickest kachikoshi since promoted to
Makuuchi)
"I was going for the mawashi....I wasn't thinking at
all about Oshi-zumo."
Kakizoe (5-4) losing to Baruto
-----------------------------------
"I was hoping I could have given more enjoyment to the
fans...It was over so quick."
Takamisakari (6-3) over Tamakasuga by yorikiri, 6.1
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
(Walking back to the dressing room, facing up while
trying to stop nosebleed)
"I did not want to have the blood fall off onto the
dohyo. I am a rikishi after all, you know. I can't
remember anything after I got the shock."
Iwakiyama (0-9) losing to Roho by uwatenage, 1.4
second
-------------------------------------------------------------------
(Losing his ninth straight)
"Everything I do, it all turns into the wrong way. I
have had not even one sumo with my own form. I want to
apologize it to all. I feel so pitiful."
Kokkai (0-9) losing to Asashoryu by yorikiri, 9.3
seconds
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(Getting his foot grabbed by the yokozuna)
"I was so surprised..not sure what to do."
"I have gone out drinking a couple of times, hoping to
turn my fortune around but it has been no use."
(Now facing another win-less soul, Iwakiyama, on Day
10, to determine the most marooned)
"After I lost seven straight, I happened to meet
Iwakiyama-zeki in Nakasu (an area in Fukuoka well
known for its eating, drinking and 'adult-oritented'
establishments) and wished each other the best. I
never imagined that it would come down to this for
both of us..."
Asashoryu (9-0) over Kokkai
----------------------------------
"His leg just came into my view so I figured I'd try
to get him lose his balance. Kokkai has power so I
first had to stop his movement and then carry on with
my own sumo."
"From this point on is when the real basho starts, you
know. I feel I am gradually getting better now."
(On Homasho)
"You know he quit university and I thought that was
waste after he spent all his time studying to get in.
But I thought he was going to be strong anyway. I
faced him once back in school days. I am looking
forward to facing him again in here now."
(For the fifth year in row, Asashoryu recorded the
most wins in year, by winning 61 bouts so far. The
only other rikishis who could have equalled him were
Hakuho who is on kyujo this basho and Miyabiyama who
recorded his fifth loss this basho and cannot no
longer overtake Asashoryu in wins.)
Kitanoumi oyakata, Kyokai chairman
--------------------------------------------
(On the rest of this basho)
"I wonder how long Kaio can stay in with Asashoryu. It
looks like ozekis may eliminate each other while
Asashoryu keeps going on without dropping any bout. I
am getting a feeling he will just march on."
Hokutoriki (0-9) losing to Kasugao by fusen
--------------------------------------------------
(After suffering his eighth straight loss and
forwarded a kyujo notice on Day 9 due to a right foot
heel injury requiring two weeks of treatment and rest)
"I injured it prior to the basho. I was able to walk
but I am not in any condition at all to compete."
