I am not talking about SFM being the only legal
source. If you want to use a Kyokai's photos then you
or anyone else will need to ask them for permission
and that will involve a fee.

Anyone can take pictures at Kokugikan or outside and
put them up on a site but that is not what I am
talking about. Actually newspapers can force websites
to take out any of their photos so if Asahi Shimbun or
Sumo magazine could request to the SumoForum to remove
them.

As I indicated MySpace and YouTube do this every day.
In fact Japanese broadcasters demanded YouTube to take
out any of their material a couple of weeks ago and
they complied very quickly. SumoForum is no different,
it's just we are such a small potato that no paper in
Japan will bother spending their timme on us.

If you are an indidual taking pictures and snapshots
to show to your friends etc or even post on your blog
and websites, the Kyokai won't come after you. After
all they are your "personal" photos.

However if you are making them available to a
publication or use a photo let's say from Sumo
magazine, then that's something else.

And if you are taking pictures of rikishis and Ozumo
in the Kokugikan (their own building) and publishing
them (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, books), you
will need to fill out an application form which is
available from the Kyokai's PR department. They may
charge a fee or waive at their own descretion.

If you are covering a basho for purpose of reporting
them in the Kokigikan or other venues, then you will
need to belong to the sumo
reporters/journalists/publishers union.

You can write about ozumo or doing anything else but
if you are covering it from there professinally, you
will need the union card which is a prerequisite for
you receiving a permission to cover the basho from the
venue.

I am sure there is a fine line between being simply a
hobbyist and professional reporter (being paid or not)
but to receive some type of credentials (i.e. press
card) you will need to deal with them on a
professional basis.
