I'd just like to add that this came out of his PhD in English where he 
focused on biographical writing. His teaching position is also in that 
field. I've read his PhD, but not the book (how similar they are I 
don't know), and I enjoyed what he wrote because he has told it in the 
words of others around Akebono. I feel this sets it apart from many 
biographies and auotbiographies, where you get only one view: the 
author reporting about a life, or the subject themselves telling it how 
they would like it.

So, to each their own and that is why recommendations and reviews 
should be taken with a pinch of salt.
